Focus on Cambodia

Cambodia Flaf

Cambodia is a country in South-East Asia that very few people know much about. It is a country with many faces to it: On the one hand it is a colourful, vibrant place full of amazing temples, a rich cultural life, lush paddy fields and sandy beaches but on the other its people are often very poor and it is littered with dangerous landmines.

The food, history, religions and culture of Cambodia make it an excellent country to use asCambodia a class cross-curricular study.

Classroom Resources

Country comparison - CAFOD have created a beautiful resource called ‘Picture My World’ which teachers could use on an Interactive Whiteboard to lead children (KS1 or 2) through a day in the life of a Cambodian child. The best thing about this resource is that all the pictures used were taken by children.

Cambodia facts and lesson ideas - An American website that is still under development but there are some nice resources in the ‘Module 2’ section that look at Cambodian New Year traditions.

Cambodian colouring - Various national emblems and objects of interest for children to colour in as a morning settling in activity.

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) - Although many of the materials written by MAG are for secondary schools it is important to make younger children aware of some of the problems faced by children in Cambodia – landmines being one of those. Why not hold a fundraising event to help support the work of MAG?
